Schefflera’s Overall Features

A well-liked tropical houseplant, Schefflera is appreciated for its abundant foliage. Its charming, hand-shaped leaves that resemble miniature umbrellas are so special. The leaves exhibit a shade of green and yellow colors.

The plant is characterized by its glossy, elongated, oval-shaped leaves that hang elegantly from a central stem. A fully-grown Schefflera typically possesses 12 to 16 leaflets originating from a single stalk, whereas a young Schefflera is more inclined to have four to six leaflets only. Each leaflet measures between 8 and 15 cm in size.

The plant is named in recognition of Jacob Scheffler, a 19th-century German botanist.

While Schefflera can yield white and pink flowers when grown outdoors in gardens, flowering is rare when kept indoors. Actually, Schefflera is most appreciated for its beautiful foliage rather than its flowers.

Schefflera, also known as Umbrella Plant, is a popular and beautiful houseplant that requires special care despite being easy to maintain.

Origin

Schefflera is native to Australia, New Guinea, and Java and belongs to family Araliaceae.

Light Requirements:

Moderate to high indirect light is suitable for Schefflera. Placing it near sunny windows ensures its vibrancy. However, Schefflera can tolerate varying levels of light and shade. Placing the plant near a bright south or east-facing window is ideal. Rotating the pot weekly ensures all parts of the plant receive adequate light.

Avoid direct sunlight, as excessive light may cause the plant to lose its freshness.

If the plant exhibits pale leaves, it may indicate insufficient light and should be relocated to a brighter spot.

Watering:

Although Schefflera can tolerate periods of drought, it is best to keep the soil consistently moist (but not overly wet or waterlogged).

During summer, watering 2 to 3 times a week is recommended, while in winter, once a week is sufficient.

If the plant becomes severely dehydrated, the leaves will droop. If you notice any dryness, place the plant in a tray filled with water for 15 minutes to help it rehydrate.

Overwatering can, too, cause discoloration and leaf drop, so it is important to allow the soil to dry between waterings. Use salt-free, purified water and avoid pouring water on the leaves and branches.

To improve the performance of your plants and maintain shiny leaves, it is recommended to mist the leaves once a week, especially in hot seasons. It is important to avoid using chemical leaf shine products.

Humidity and temperature:

Schefflera plants thrive in moderate to high humidity, which mimics their tropical origins. It is recommended to maintain humidity levels around 40-50%, and during hot or dry seasons, humidifiers can be used.

The ideal temperature range for Schefflera is between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius. Exposure to extreme hot or cold environments can cause the leaves of Schefflera to drop.

To prevent leaf drop, it is important to shield the plant from extreme cold or hot weather by keeping it away from drafts and avoiding proximity to heating or cooling devices.

To maintain the cleanliness of Schefflera leaves, it is recommended to dust them regularly. If the leaves accumulate dust, you can use a damp sponge or cloth to gently clean them. However, it's important to avoid using polishing materials on the leaves more than once a month.

Proper Soil:

Opt for a well-draining soil mix with a medium texture that includes peat moss.

Recommended soil mixture consists of regular soil, leaf soil, and peat moss. The soil should be light and allow excess water to drain easily.

Providing a soluble plant fertilizer containing micro-organic nutrients once a month is beneficial for the plant's growth. Withering leaves and stems may indicate a need for additional fertilizer. During the growing season, it is important to adequately nourish Schefflera plants. To do so, you can either feed them twice a week with liquid fertilizer for houseplants. By providing them with the recommended feeding regimen, you can help ensure their optimal growth and well-being.
