Oxalis Triangularis overall features
Oxalis triangularis, commonly known as the plant, is characterized by its perennial nature and acaulescent growth, emerging from rhizomes covered in scales.
The plant has other beautiful names such as love plant, purple shamrock as well as wood sorrel. Shamrock in Ireland refers to clover, with three leaves in triangle shape. Oxalis triangularis grows out of a rhizome, which grows fast.
Growing to a height of 20 cm, the gorgeous plant is particularly appreciated for its charming butterfly-like foliage in purple color. The leaves’ color might vary from shades of purple to blackish or reddish. Keeping it among green-leaved plants can create a stunning atmosphere.
Its triangular leaves fold down when it’s night. This is called nyctinasty. Also, as soon as you touch them, the leaves start closing up; so, you should stop doing this quite often.
The plant blossoms in spring and summer; its trumpet-shaped flowers come in pink, purple or white colors. They create magnificently-beautiful scenery in contrast to green plants.
The fairly low-maintenance Oxalis is famous for its invasive weed in forest. This being said, some varieties including Oxalis Triangularis are not invasive and don’t trail across the ground. You can simply keep in hanging baskets.
The plant contains a high amount of oxalic acid. So, keep this in mind. The leaves and flowers taste lemony; however, corms are pleasantly sweet. The plant is used in food industry for its natural hue.
There’s a wide variety to Oxalis triangularis. So, feel free to contact us if faced with any issue regarding the plant’s care.
Origin
Oxalis triangularis from the family of Oxalidaceae comes from South America and Brazil.
Light Requirements
Indirect medium to bright sunlight provides a cozy condition for the plant to grow.
Bright light is necessary for its growth; i.e., at least 4 hours of light every day. You can use artificial lighting with UV rays for indoor purposes.
You can place it near east-facing windows in morning, when the sunlight is not harsh. Take precautions to prevent it from being exposed to too much direct sunlight. To guarantee adequate light and equally-thriving foliage, rotate the pot once every 2 weeks.
Watering
For watering, wait until the soil dries out. Poke your finger into the top 2 centimeters of the soil to check dryness. Water it until water is drained out of the soil into the container beneath. The resistant plant needs a moderate amount of water; however, it will grow 50% better if there’s extra watering. For lavish growth, you can use rainwater.
Overwatering is no good as it hurts the bulb. At least once a week or every 2 weeks would do as far as watering is concerned.
Proper Soil
A well-drained potting mix works well. Opt for a standard Premium indoor potting mix when planting Oxalis, as it promotes healthy growth. Avoid excessively wet soil, but maintain moisture levels in the soil. Additionally, remember to select a pot with proper drainage.
A well-draining container will help your plant grow cheerfully.
A slow-release fertilizer can be used to nourish the soil. Fertilize every two to three weeks in growth season.
The plant can grow in almost all types of soil; however, it adores the soil with light shining from the above. Also, good drainage and air circulation is essential for its growth.
Humidity and Temperature
In terms of humidity, the plant doesn’t need so much care; therefore, you should stop worrying about creating a high-level humidity place.
Occasional Misting on alternate days is a good idea. You can apply humidity tray when heaters are running in the house to retain humidity.
Typical temperatures indoors are fine. On the other hand, the optimal temperature is around 60-70°F (15-21°C).
Unpleasant weather conditions including rainstorms, direct sunlight, and heat waves will damage the plant.
Note:
Oxalis Triangularis is known to be toxic to pets; so, we recommend you to keep them away.
