Jungle
Ficus overall features:
With a variety of names such as fig tree, weeping figs, and Benjamin figs, the Ficus plant features beautiful glossy leaves in dark green shades. The beautiful genus includes various species.
The plant is available in many sizes and shapes. Whether in shrub or tree forms, it often contains aerial roots with shiny leaves and sharp tips.
With low-maintenance conditions, you can easily keep this decorative plant at home.
Ficus absorbs fine dust in the air and helps to clean the air. It reduces harmful compounds in the air such as phenol, benzene and trichloroethylene and then converts them into amino acids and sugar.
Origin
From the family of Moraceae, the lovely plant originates from tropical places, southwest Asia and the Mediterranean.
Lighting
Bright, indirect sunlight serves best for strong growth. The tolerant plant can bear lower light conditions as well. However, sufficient light is recommended. Artificial light can be a substitute for natural light alternatives. The plant’s pot should not be placed in direct, harsh sunlight as it might get sunburn and become discolored. You can place it near a window with a protective shield.
For a better photosynthesis, you can turn the pot around to ensure the entire plant receives sunlight.
Watering
Keep a watering balance for various species; that is, the soil should neither be too wet nor too dry! Touch the soil surface with your finger to check; if dry, you can go for watering. Keep in mind that the soil should be moist; not wet!
Watering is quite different in winter and summer. Keep an eye on the soil; check out often in summer but water less in cold times.
Humidity and temperature
Humidity and warm temperatures are a must for growing a Ficus plant indoors; so, you should try to create tropical conditions.
If your place is not humid enough, you can regularly sprinkle water over the leaves. Prior to that, place it where there’s no sun to avoid black strains on the leaves.
The ideal temperature is between 16 º and 21 º Celsius. Threatening conditions might occur under 13 °.
Also protect the plant from sudden changes in weather conditions.
Soil
Good drainage is required. For this reason, the pot should contain holes. Excess water would hurt the plant. Don’t allow water to collect around the roots; you don’t want to see root rot.
A mixture of garden soil, leaf soil as well as peat moss is the best soil type for the best growth.
You can use liquid fertilizers for a healthy growth, but keep in mind that this shouldn’t be done in winter, when the plant is idle. 20-20-20 fertilizer is also regarded as a good nourisher.
