Marginata
Dracaena features
Dracaena marginata, commonly known as dragon tree, is a popular gorgeous plant that you should consider having at home. Interestingly, the name of Dracaena comes from the ancient Greek word “drakaina” meaning female dragon.
The beautiful houseplant has short ringed stalks and thin pointed green leaves with red-brownish edges. The low-maintenance plant can be kept in any home, not only to add outstanding texture but also to freshen the air. Due to the high adaptability of Dracaena, it can easily be taken care of in a variety of places. Similar to palm trees, the plant has strong roots, enabling it to withstand undesirable conditions. Outdoors, it produces gorgeous creamy white flowers in spring. Flowers hardly ever grow indoors, however.
An outdoor situation allows the plant to grow to 6 m. It might grow up to 2 m. indoors.
Origin
Native to the forests in Madagascar- off southern Africa- the striking plant belongs to the family of Asparagaceae.
Lighting
Dracaena can cope with low to medium light. Nonetheless, bright indirect sun is best recommended. Protect it from severe light to avoid burning the foliage. The flexible plant can be placed near a north-facing window for flourishing growth. Shaded and darker places can also aid the growth of your Dracaena. Placing it near a big window in cold times can be a good thing to do. From April to September, move the plant to a shady place.
Watering
In growing seasons, water Dracaena regularly. However, allow the plant to become dry to the touch till another watering. Try to keep the soil moist in this period. From October to March, you don’t need to water that often; once every two weeks would be acceptable. Yellow leaves signify water needs.
The sensitive houseplant doesn’t like extra salt and fluoride; so, if you notice that the tips of the leaves turn brownish, flush the soil properly and use rainwater or purified water.
Humidity and Temperature
The tropical plant flourishes in high levels of humidity, so, avoid keeping it in dry places. If humidity is low, you can mist the leaves every now and then. Another option for retaining humidity is to use a tray of water and pebbles.
The optimal temperature usually ranges between 21° and 26° Celsius. At below 10° C. the plant will be damaged.
Soil
Well-drained soil helps the healthy growth of the plant. For ideal growth, potting mix works best. Overwatering can be made up for through a pot with draining holes. Neutral to acidic soil is ideal.
As the varieties of Dracaena grow slowly, they don’t actually need much fertilizer. However, you can use liquid fertilizer in spring. Avoid fertilizing in winter.
