Cordyline features

Cordyline (also called the Ti plant) is a plant with beautifully colored, large, glossy leaves. Depending on the species, the colors range from red, pink and purple to yellow, white and green. The natural, live plant with its gorgeous spear-shaped leaves is a charming decorative element that enhances the beauty of your house.

A tropical plant, the lovely evergreen is easily grown; you might not face any serious issue taking care of the plant indoors. Even though Cordyline is from the Asparagaceae family, it might look like palms.

According to the Austronesian cultures of the South Pacific, Cordyline is a holy plant that repels the devil and evil thoughts. The green-leaved species epitomizes good health and peacefulness.

Origin

Cordyline originates from Australia and New Zealand. Other places of origin include the western Pacific Ocean area and southeastern Asia.

Lighting

The shrub likes medium, indirect light conditions. Cordyline species with darker shades can adapt to bright light whereas lighter hues prefer indirect sunlight.

Place the pot near eastern windows or a short distance from southern or western windows. Shelter the plant from direct light over spring and summer; it gets sun-burnt and dies with direct, severe sun exposure. In other seasons, the leaves might cherish one or two hours of direct light every day.

Reduce watering if held in a shady place. Remember to dust the leaves, as clean leaves allow good photosynthesis.

Watering

Not too much water is needed for this plant. But be sure to hydrate well in hot seasons. Check the soil and dont let it get dry or soggy. Try to spray often. In winter, decrease the number of waterings to once every 2 weeks. However, dont let the soil dry out entirely.

Once a quarter to half of the pots soil gets dry, start thorough watering. Like other tropical plants, to avoid rot root remove any excess water from the saucer.

Humidity

High humidity is important for vigorous growth of Cordyline. To increase the humidity level, a humidifier or pebble tray is recommended.

Keep Cordyline away from heaters or operating radiators which can scorch the leaves. Use a humidity tray to create a steadily damp environment and moisturize the soil.

The ideal temperature goes from 18° to 20 ° Celsius; below 13 ° the leaves start withering. Nonetheless, a short-term fall in temperature (10 ° to 12 ° C) might be tolerable as long as there isnt high moisture. Protect the plant from sudden temperature fluctuations, winds and cold drafts.

Soil

Fertile, well-drained soil provides a desirable habitat for the plant. Never let it get waterlogged.

Apply ready-made soil mix or a combination of perlite, peat moss, garden soil and vermicompost. To enhance growth, use soluble fertilizers such as 10-10-10 formula in growing seasons. Fertilizing is not required in winter.

The appropriate soil pH is neutral to alkaline; i.e., 6 to 6.5.
