In the family of Araceae, the perennial plant has eye-catching variegated foliage. The beautifully patterned leaves display charming colors of green, pink, red, white or silver. Spotted, plain, striped and veined leaves in glamorous colors suit any kind of home decoration.  The leaves are so attractive that you cant pass by them without a lengthy look.

The heart-shaped leafy plant grows from a tuber. It has a thin stem which comes up from a central shoot tuber inside the soil. It acts up like a heart for the body.

Caladium blooms anytime from spring into fall. Spike- or spathe-shaped flowers in pink or white multiply its elegance.

Origin:

The plant originated in the lush rainforests of South and Central America.

Lighting

The tropical plant grows best in indirect light or partial shade. Keep Caladium away from direct, intense sunlight so the leaves dont scorch. Kept indoors, medium, indirect light is ideal.

Outdoors, partial to complete shade will benefit the plant. Northern-eastern window exposure helps encourage growth.

Temperature and Humidity

As caladium comes from warm, tropical rainforests, so it loves ample humidity and heat for its habitat. To raise moisture, you can either use a humidifier or a pebble tray. The ideal temperature goes from 18 ° to 25 ° Celsius.

Once you notice brown, yellowish, and brittle leaves, it is an alarm to move the pot on to a more humid place.

Strong winds, drafts and inappropriate temperature might threaten the plant. So, if you keep it outdoors shelter it from such threats. At home, keep it away from heaters, radiators, or doors where draft gets in.

Watering

When 25% of the soil dries out, its ready for watering. Water well and dont forget to remove excess water in the saucer; otherwise, it might cause root rot. Winter, when the leaves die back, is a time for caladium to hibernate, so stop watering. Obviously, the plant needs ample watering in spring and summer to start growing again.

Soil

The plant wants good draining; add clay pebbles and gravel at the bottom of the pot to help water go through the soil properly.

Splash water on the leaves with a spray all year long, especially in growing phase. Calcium-free water is ideal for spraying. Outdoor plants normally need more water in hot temperatures. So, if you keep them in the garden, you might need to water them regularly in hot summers.

Keep the soil damp for better results. Held outdoors or indoors, the plant asks for rich, well-drained soil. Never let the plant sit in dry or soggy soil. Peat and loam mix serves best for the growth of the foliage.

Preferable acidic soil has a pH of 5.5 to 6.2.

Biweekly fertilizing is recommended in growing months. Liquid soluble fertilizer helps the plant thrive vibrantly.
