Asplenium nidus Features
The Asplenium nidus, known as the bird’s-nest fern, features pointed light green
leaves with brown middle vein and wavy edges. The charming houseplant, from
the Aspleniaceae family, needs ideal warmth and humidity. The naturally-
epiphytic plant doesn’t bloom.
Origin:
The gorgeous plant comes from the rainforests in Asia and Australia.
Lighting
The perennial plant will keep growing in constantly medium light. Avoid direct or
harsh sunlight. Partial shade is good for the plant. To make sure that the plant
gets the light evenly, regularly turn it around.
You can suitably place its pot by south-facing windows.
Watering
Within growing seasons (April to September), thoroughly water bird’s-nest fern.
Wait until almost 2 inches of the soil dries out to water for the next time.
In cold times, limit watering since the plant’s growth almost stops; however, don’t
allow the soil to get entirely dry.
Soil
Organic compost and peat are a good soil solution. Good drainage is necessary; a
pot with a hole doesn’t allow the soil to get drenched, which in turn prevents it
from root rot and maintains the plant’s life. The most preferred pH goes from 5.0
to 5.5.
Try to fertilize the evergreen plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month
within growing season. Do not use the fertilizer on the fronds; you might hurt the
foliage. Keep a balance for applying the fertilizer as too much of it might change the
leaves’ shape and color.
Humidity
The ideal temperature ranges from 15 ° to 23 ° Celsius. Sudden temperatures and
inappropriate humidity might be disturbing and cause the plant to droop.
Don’t leave the pot in a cold environment for too long; the plant will die. A cool
breeze from your house’s air conditioner could damage it.
To add humidity to the environment, you can easily use humidifiers. Another
option would be to lay the pot in a tray covered in pebbles and water.
Nonetheless, make sure that the roots don’t sit in water, which is a threat to
Asplenium Fern’s life.
Best places to keep the plant for better humidity include a greenhouse,
bathroom, or nursery.
