Aglaonema’s overall features

Commonly named Chinese evergreen, Aglaonema is a perennial plant which

originates from southeast Asia: China or the Philippines. From Araceae family, it

has gorgeously-patterned foliage in a variety of charming colors. The striking

leaves in colors of green, yellow, pink and red are long with pointed tips. The plant

blooms in late summer; the flowers are creamy. The plant adores warmth and

humidity.

The beautiful green leaves need partial shade as they would grow gray or yellow

due to severe sun exposure.

Watering

Water the plant often; however, only use little amount of water, preferably

rainwater or lime-free water.

As a general rule of thumb, throughout spring to fall houseplants need more water.

So, keep this in mind. Avoid overwatering as it rots the roots. In warm seasons

wait till the surface of the soil is dry before watering. In contrast, in cold seasons,

make sure that the upper few centimeters of the soil dry out.

After watering, don’t let the plant sit in drained water collected in the saucer.

Remove excess water as the it might cause rot roots.

Lighting

Green species of Aglonema tolerate low light conditions; however, it will flourish

much better in bright, indirect light. The adaptable plant might feel comfortable

with low lighting but its growth will slow down. Keep non-green colored,

variegated Aglonema in medium to bright sun to avoid color transformation.

Artificial lighting is also appropriate so you can comfortably keep them in houses,

offices and hotels. The various species of the plant burgeon near south, east-facing

windows.

Direct sunlight should be avoided as it causes burning, discoloration or paleness of

the foliage.

Soil

The soil should be loose, lightweight and well-drained. It should be acidic with a

pH ranging from 5.6 to 6.5. A mixture of perlite, leaf soil and organic matter helps

a flourishing growth as it contains healthy nutrients and right minerals.

On growing seasons, apply sprays to sprinkle water on a daily basis. For better

draining use a pot with many draining holes. You can also use pebbles at the

bottom of your pot.

Humidity

The tropical plant grows better in high levels of humidity. It loves a humidity of

60% to 70%. The most proper temperature is from 18 ° to 26.5º Celsius. Never

leave the plant under 15 °. Put it in the warmest spot of your home where the

humidity is convenient too.

If you notice that the foliage is curling or droopy, you should quickly move it over

to a place with better growing conditions.

Misting the leaves guarantees the life of the plant. Do it once within a few days. In

hot summertime, you can do this quite often. You can also use humidifiers to boost

humidity.
